His darkly whimsical sense of humor can't be topped as far as I'm concerned. But above all, I'm in awe of the fact that he was a self-taught artist, and he emerged with a style that's so distinctive and iconic.
And along with Edgar Allan Poe and M.R. James, he makes the third of my Holy Trinity. And they all occupy a fixed point in my universe (with Charles Dickens and the other greats meekly knocking at the golden doors and never going past them - they have their own place in my literary heaven).
